The coolest albums sometimes come from unexpected sources. Garden of Souls is a solo project by Dutch guitarist Noud Smeets. A very good musician who has been active with bands and projects intermittently since 1985, but has never really put himself in the spotlight. With “Anam Cara” this could easily change. It is a strong guitar album with a strikingly modern and international sound.
Smeets' music is also noticeably harder than that of many other guitar heroes. In many songs he first stacks fat riffs on top of each other for a  while, his flashy guitar solos and beautifully layered melody lines are lyered over there.The basis of the album is formed by 6 long tracks, of which “in Disguise” is the only one that also contains vocals. In between there are some shorter, experimental pieces that provide the necessary variety. Anyone who secretly picks up an old guitar record from the Schrapnel label but also listens with the same pleasure to contemporary bands such as Obscura, Allegaen or Arch Enemy will certainly appreciate “Garden of Souls”. In addition to a lot of guitar work by Noud Smeets, the album also features guest contributions from drummer Atma Anur (Tony MacAlpine, Jason Becker), bassist Barend Courbois, Annihilator bassist Rich Gray and drummer Alex Rudinger of Conquering Dystopia.

 

De coolste albums komen soms uit onverwachte hoek. Garden of souls is een soloproject van de Nederlandse gitarist Noud Smeets. Eensteengoede muzikant die die al sinds 1985 met tussenpozen actief is met bands en projecten, maar zichzelf echt nooit echt in de spotlight heeft gespeeld. Met“Anam Cara” zou dit zomaar kunnen veranderen. Het is een sterke gitaarplaat meteen opvallend moderne en internationale sound.De muziek van Smeets is ook aanmerkelijk harder dan die van veel andere gitaarhelden.In veel nummers stapelt hij eerst een tijdlang vette riffs op elkaar, zijn flitsende gitaarsolo’s en mooi gelaagde melodielijnen komen daar vervolgens nog eens overheen. De basis van het album wordt gevormd door 6 lange tracks waarvan “in Disguise” als enige ook zang bevat. Tussendoor komen daar nog wat kortere, experimentele stukken voorbij die de nodige afwisseling brengen.
Wie stiekem nog wel eens een oude gitaarplaat van het Schrapnel-label uit de kast pakt maar met hetzelfde plezier ook naar hedendaagse bands als Obscura, Allegaen of Arch Enemy luisterd zal “Garden of Souls” zeker kunnen waarderen.
Naast veel gitaarwerk van Noud Smeets zijn er oop de plaat ook gastbijdragen te
horen van drummer Atma Anur (Tony MacAlpine, Jason Becker), Bassist Barend
